Sometimes it’s fun to talk to people in the know and just enjoy the candor. At CTIA (News - Alert) over 100 companies identified themselves as M2M platforms. Some of them were fairly logical and had a good story to tell, while others just felt like they were rebranding things.
Just as the term ‘cloud’ can be used as another word for the Internet, platform can be used as another word for well, let’s look at it.
Network management systems. Logically this is a good fit. As I said to my friend, “Take a network element system and have it threshold the sensors.” Eureka – M2M.
- Router management systems. Aggregate and report and you have an M2M platform.
- Business intelligence systems. You can’t go anywhere without knowing the rules – M2M platform.
- Have a collection of APIs? If you communicate with the sensors you can call it a platform.
And so it continues.
So let’s try to get our arms around what we need from a platform. First of all we can make the case that all of these platforms are valid components. Sensor management, network diagnostics, traffic prioritization, business intelligence and of course API’s all bring value to platform strategies... Read More
