Nvidia just started testing its market leading self-driving car technology in California on real roads. I'm a fan of self-driving cars largely because they'd save something like 35,000 lives every year in the U.S. alone that would otherwise be lost in car accidents. This year has seen the Internet of Things (IoT) grow immensely, but what can we expect from the IoT in 2017? Here are four industry predictions. In early 2016, we shared our predictions of key security threats likely to hit us this year. As predicted, cyber espionage, ransomware, insider threats, IoT device attacks and attacks on industrial control systems (ICS) all increased in 2016. A number of other targets remain in the line of hackers' fire, with both financial gain and personal notoriety being key drivers of malicious activity. Sometimes you run into a product that redefines a segment. In cars it was things like the 240Z and Miata, in Smartphones the BlackBerry and then the iPhone, and in PCs there was the ThinkPad clam shell laptop and, more recently the MacBook Air. Then there are even more rare products that blend segments. The Areal Atom and CanAm Spider blend cars and motorcycles in different ways, the fascinating WaterCar a powerful car and boat, and the Yoga Book blends a tablet and a laptop into something very different but, strangely enough very compelling.
