MSFT Down In A Sliding Market
Markets erased morning gains after disappointing numbers from Exxon Mobil and low consumer confidence data reported for January. Shares of MSFT have been trading in the negative today. Upcoming catalysts include Windows 8, Windows Server 8, Office 15 and Windows Phone 8; expansion in the smartphone market with primary hardware partner Nokia; strides in cloud computing; profitability in the online business, including integration of Skype; and continued evolution of Kinect and next generation Xbox. The stock currently trades at 7.9x Enterprise Value / TTM Free Cash Flow.

Head Of Microsoft International Admits PC Sales Are Not Great (Bloomberg)
Jean-Philippe Courtois, president of Microsoft International, talks to Maryam Nemazee of Bloomberg about computer sales and innovation. In terms of slowing PC sales, he hides behind Microsoft's recent results but finally admits there were two issues:
  • Supply chain issues in Thailand
  • Clear challenges in Europe in terms of consumer patterns

Microsoft State Refund Going To Purchase iPads (Wisconsin State Journal)
Microsoft was forced to pay Wisconsin nearly $80 million dollars in order to settle claims that the company cheated consumers into overpaying for software purchases. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft has issued vouchers to state schools, with $3.4 million allocated for Madison. The school district will use the money to purchase 600 iPads as a learning tool for students. That's gotta hurt. Read »

Get Ready For Motion Sensored Laptops (The Daily)
Microsoft confirmed that there are indeed official prototypes of laptops featuring a Kinect sensor. In terms of functionality, there are hundreds of different ways that motion control could be leveraged in a portable. Gaming has the most obvious applications, but a Kinect-enabled laptop could also toggle between programs with the wave of a hand, or media controls could be tweaked with the wag of a finger. It could also offer a new way for disabled individuals to interact with their devices. Read »

Tango Will Support 3.5x More Languages Than iOS (WP Sauce)
Microsoft revealed some interesting information during a Windows Phone developers camp in India. An on-stage speaker had confirmed that the next release of Windows Phone, codenamed "Tango,” will support 120 languages. iOS currently only supports 34 languages and Android 55 languages. Tango would be on par with Windows 7 which supports 125 languages. The speaker also confirmed that developers will be able to develop apps for the “next release” of Windows Phone using C++ native coding. Next release being anyone's guess. Read »
