Triangle Tablet, as satirized on “The Office”, could actually be a reality

Some of you might remember when we covered how the popular television show The Office (American version) satirized PC tablet culture as Dwight Schrute introduced a triangular tablet. Apparently, someone wants to harness “The Power of the Pyramid” as they are trying to develop an actual triangle tablet.

The man is Eric Calisto, and apparently he was inspired by the aforementioned episode of The Office. You can read about his progress at Kickstarter, and he wants about $25,000 of funding. At this writing, only four people have pledged about $28.

I noticed the picture on Kickstarter isn’t really of a triangular tablet, but only a triangle. Considering that Kickstarter is made for concept technology looking for funding, I’m surprised that there isn’t a better mock-up as proof of concept. Perhaps this guy needs to borrow some props from NBC.

If you want to try can get on board with this possible new tablet fad, head over to Kickstarter and pledge now. The first individual who gives $5,000 will actually get to pick the name for the tablet.

I’m not planning on sending an amount that large, but I do have a few suggestions for names: the Isosceles, the Equilateral, and the Scalene. Oh wait, those are just triangle types, and I can’t help but wonder type of triangle this tablet will be. Of course, I wonder if there is even a future for a triangular tablet, because I want to instinctively say “no”.

LG will show 55-inch OLED screen at CES 2012

About five years ago, I went to CES for the first time and saw Sony’s XEL-1 OLED television. It was the first OLED, and although the picture was beautiful, the screen was so…small.

LG has just announced that they will have a 55-inch OLED screen at CES 2012. That is actually the biggest OLED screen, for now. The company has already worked on a super-thin 31-inch model.

The giant-sized screen has a contrast ratio of 100,000:1 and can produce more colors than other displays. It is developed by using Oxide TFT technology. LG has stated that: "The new technology allows light emitting diodes to self-generate light and features a reaction velocity to electric signals over 1000 times faster than liquid crystal".

This 55-inch TV doesn’t have a price tag or a release date. It actually is made as more of a concept TV rather than something that they will put on the market.

It sounds like LG is “testing the waters” as far as future OLED technology is concerned. Of course, the problem with OLED technology is it is quite expensive. I remember that the aforementioned XEL-1 cost thousands, and considering that screen was so small, I can only imagine how much a 55-inch OLED would cost.

Rollerman really flies on concrete

You know how certain videos make their rounds on the Internet? For some reason, Rollerman is really getting the hits.

If you have any doubts why, then I suggest hitting the jump and watching it for yourself. I swear, it looks like Superman, if he could only fly a few inches off the ground.

This is possible because the suit has rollers similar to the ones on rollerblades on the front, the back, the shoulders, the arms, and more. This allows for all kinds of extreme speeds (up to 70 mph), in many positions.

This is probably one of those videos that should have the “don’t try this at home” label. Honestly, I feel like donning his roller suit and trying this. I can’t help but wonder how one trains to use this suit. When I was skiing, there were the “bunny slopes”, but I’m not certain what the Rollerman equivalent of that would be.

By the way, Rollerman’s alter-ego is Jean-Yves Blondeau. Although he doesn’t use his roller suit to fight crime, he created his suit as part of his graduation project in Paris. He can be booked for private engagements, and has appeared in the Jim Carrey movie Yes Man.

Portal Christmas Tree

Fans of the video game Portal as well as its sequel will definitely be able to jive with this cute looking Christmas tree – especially when one half of it is sinking down into the floor, while the other half cheekily pokes it’s top out from the ceiling. The light effects that comprise of the rings on both the bottom and the top also add to the overall effect, and good thing none of the presents were harmed or split into half – in fact, there are no presents whatsoever under the tree, simply because the law of gravity would supercede whatever portals that open up, and the presents would just fall down onto the floor, through the portal, and back again – ad infinitum. Best to stash this year’s goodies elsewhere in a safe and stable place, don’t you think so? That must be some special kind of glue used to make sure the top part of the tree remains stuck to the ceiling throughout this Christmas season.

iSample is one smart vending machine

Vending machines used to be dumb machines, where all they do is spit out whatever you decide to exchange with your hard earned money. I guess things are going to change in the future, where Kraft Foods and Intel have come together with the iSample smart vending machine. Just what exactly makes this particular vending machine so smart, you ask? For starters, it is capable of capturing an image of your face, analyzing it, before coming to a computerized conclusion of your age and gender – selling you only the relevant items in the process.

Currently, the iSample sees action in delivering a new kind of dessert in customer trials. To put it in a nutshell, the iSample enables Kraft to tailor the product to the shopper, while ensuring kids are excluded from this particular adult-focused promotion.

Intel has plans to retrofit this particular technology to existing vending machines, so that companies are able to figure out just what kind of people are purchasing their products. Of course, another variable to consider would be the fact that this study would be limited only to those who like to make purchases from vending machines, what about others who like to go to stores instead?

An optical sensor will be fitted to the top of the machine, where it is capable of picking out the shape of the human face. Once detecting a human in front of it, the computer processor inside will then carry out a bunch of calculations that are based on measurements such as the distance between the eyes, nose and ears. These will then be used to determine whether one is male or female, dropping them into one of four age brackets. All these calculations will take a fraction of a second, before the iSample determines what, if any, product the shopper should be served. Ever wondered what would have happened if you put up a photo of someone else instead?

Kraft currently uses the iSample to trial Temptations – a jelly-based dessert. Marketed as “the first Jell-O that’s just for adults”, this machine will politely ask the child to step away should it detect a child instead.

Samsung introduces transparent LCD displays

I still remember when I watched Minority Report, where the idea of a transparent LCD display certainly blew my mind away. Of course, since then, Hollywood did come up with its fair share of transparent displays across various movies such as "Avatar" and "I, Robot", implanting the thought that transparent display screens are no big deal in the future. If that is the case, then chances are we are already in the future, considering what Samsung has done with their LTI460AP01 Transparent LCD display.

Let us take a break here and read on how different transparent LCDs are compared to your regular LCDs. First of all, regular LCD panels require the presence of BLUs (Back Light Units) as a light source so that an image can be displayed. BLUs are more or less crucial for the operation of all LCD panels, as not having any light source would be equal to seeing nothing. As for transparent LCDs, it uses other available light sources in the vicinity such as sunlight and in-door lighting. The question is, what happens at night? Well, in the midst of darkness, this is where the transparent BLU kicks in – one that was specially designed for transparent panels and to function as a light source.

Obviously, I do expect to see showfloors take advantage of such technology, not to mention high end hotels that want to wow their guests with the very best experience possible. Apart from being stylish, there is another advantage to the transparent display that would certainly make your pockets smile – its energy efficiency. Whenever the transparent BLU is not activated, the transparent LCD will only consume 10% of the electricity that a regular LCD screen of an equivalent size guzzles down. Cool and eco-friendly, what more can one ask for?

Of course, it would be normal to think that such a transparent LCD display is not going to come cheap when available, although the application and benefits of it in everyday life, especially from the corporate front, is something that we think would far outweigh the initial investment amount.
