Way back in 1971 the Monty Python comedy group put out an anthology film based on their then hit TV series Monty Python's Flying Circus called, And Now For Something Completely Different. Dominant global chip manufacturer Intel came out with its second quarter earnings, and while they may not be completely different from past reports they do highlight the changing nature of their business and the technology industry in general. Windows launches have always been a mixed bag for me. I started with Windows 95, which set the bar for an event, but as I stepped off the plane coming home I sprained my ankle badly which became a metaphor for the post-launch disaster that then occurred. Each subsequent launch event was troubled with bad timing, mixed up consumer/corporate messaging, and CEO guests that, at the last moment, behaved like spoiled children. Well, it seems, with Windows 10 Microsoft is finding a better groove. Anyone who has played fantasy baseball knows it is a long season littered with peaks and valleys of performance, which ends in apathy, crushing defeat or glory. Fantasy sports have burst into the mainstream over the last several years. They have evolved from a group of men in a basement making picks on paper to a multibillion dollar industry with the newest twist adding an exciting and immediately gratifying experience-daily fantasy leagues. Netflix surprised investors with a better-than-expected addition of 3.28 million streaming subscribers for the second quarter, translating to revenue that was in line with estimates at $1.65 billion. The younger generation of television viewers has already begun to stray away from cable television, opting instead for streaming video services online like Netflix and Hulu. HBO's announcement earlier this year of HBO Now, a service that allows users to watch HBO programming online without a cable subscription, will only continue that trend. Comcast has become the first major cable company to try and adapt to this new generation of entertainment seekers, announcing a new service called Stream, to be launched later this year. The number of tech companies doing well and being launched is greater than at any time in history. Today, Facebook crossed the $250 billion dollar valuation mark in only three years following its IPO - a record. Moreover, it's actually disrupting Google through its absolutely massive reach and the fact its woven into all our lives. Most recently, it's launched an advertising network, has seen meteoric increases in video views and now wants to get a piece of the music video business. Google - although still considered a search monopoly has to fight the social media king in areas which were defensible just a few short years ago. For anyone out there who's found that Flash doesn't work like it should on Mozilla's Firefox and Google's Chrome browsers, there's a backhanded bit of good news afoot: it's not your system that's the problem. Rather, reports note, the problem is with Adobe Flash itself, a problem of sufficient magnitude that Mozilla and Firefox actually pulled support for the tool. There was a time when it was important to have a good password for logging on to your work server. I would set up systems that required a new password every six months, which had to be different from your current one. However, once you got home all you needed to do was turn your computer on-no password required. There was a distinction between work and home that no longer exists.
