Latest Featured Articles Langley, British Columbia-based Frozen Mountain, creators of IceLink, a cross-browser WebRTC stack, has announced enhancements to IceLink that enable it to go beyond audio/video conferencing to support all forms of data transmission including text chat, file transfer and more through the use of reliable data channels. Having a second subscriber identity module (SIM) card in a smartphone may not seem like a high priority, but for some users, it's absolutely vital. This is particularly true given the increasingly mobile workforce, and it's reflected in the results of a recent study from Strategy Analytics. That study showed that the number of users for dual-SIM phones is set for a big climb worldwide, and in fairly short order, too. Just in case you missed all of the commotion this week, WebRTC was placed right at the center of an interesting privacy problem as a result of its use by the venerable New York Times (NYT) on its Nytime.com website to track the private IP address of visitors. While NYT apparently is not using the information gathered for nefarious purposes, unless you consider building better visitor profiles for marketing reasons nefarious, there are two obvious problems here. Startup appear.in uses WebRTC to create innovative video chat application. OTT communications involve making calls over the Internet without paying someone for dedicated telephony lines. In fact, when users tap OTT applications in public Wifi hotspots, for example, the cost to the caller is zero. While this may be irritating traditional telephony providers, there's not a lot they can do about. When AT&T first launched its Apple iPhone, the company tried to impose a restriction on VoIP services over its 3G network. Outrage from users and pressure from the FCC caused AT&T to drop the restriction. There truly is nothing stopping users of OTT services going forward, and OTT is coming to the workplace.
