Cloud computing is making enterprise grade IT services available at price points individual consumers and organizations can afford. As the technology continues to evolve and more 'as-a-service' solutions enter the market place, the return on investment (RoI), CAPEX and OPEX of on-premises IT infrastructure is being reevaluated by many organizations. The growth in the market has resulted in innovations that gives service providers the tools they need to build and deliver cloud based solutions. Many authors, including myself, have written about the benefits of the cloud in its many forms, yet there have been very few detailed case studies on the hard benefits and savings we expect. Given the dearth of hard evidence, I felt many would benefit from the results of a recent private cloud study by Forrester. Like sharks off the coast of North Carolina this summer, information security threats are lurking. And now that cloud computing is woven into the fabric of IT everywhere, specific risks to an enterprise's data apply.
