 Good morning! This is the tech news you need to know this Tuesday. 1. Four senior US House Republicans sent letters to Apple and Alphabet asking questions about data collection. The questions asked about collecting location data as well as audio recording data on iPhone and Android devices without user consent. 2. A former Facebook moderator has described how she had to review 8,000 posts a day and that the job made her numb to images of child abuse. Sarah Katz worked as a content reviewer at Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, California, through a third-party contractor, Vertisystem. 3. Twitter's CFO shot down a report in The Washington Post indicating that the removal of 70 million fake accounts from its service impacted its reported user metrics. The CFO said that the accounts Twitter removes have not been active for 30 days or more. 4. Index Ventures, the backer behind Bird, Sonos, and Deliveroo, has raised $1.65 billion for two new funds. Index has had a good 2018 after its portfolio firms Adyen and Dropbox went public. 5. There's zero compelling evidence showing tech is as addictive as cocaine, according to scientists. Professor Andrew Przybylski of the Oxford Internet Institute believes that Silicon Valley engineers accept questionable psychological data as gospel when building their apps. 6. YouTube is taking steps to combat fake news and conspiracy theories on the platform. When major stories occur, YouTube plans to immediately follow up by providing brief previews of news articles in YouTube's search results that link to the full stories so that users can "find quality" information. 7. A recent Android update for Snapchat had something hidden in the code — hints at a future update that could include a collaboration with Amazon. The feature, reported by TechCrunch, would be able to identify objects that the camera is pointed at, then link users to Amazon to purchase the products, if desired. 8. Uber, Google and top VCs poured $335 million into scooter startup Lime. This is Uber's first-time investment in Lime, and the two are partnering to offer scooter rentals through the Uber app. 9. Microsoft has unveiled a new $400 Surface tablet to take on both the iPad and the MacBook Air at the same time. Microsoft has shrunk its Surface Pro form factor into something portable yet comfortable to type on. 10. Some MoviePass users are having trouble cancelling their subscriptions this week, thanks to a bug that prevents them from using the mobile app's cancellation options.
