Amazon has launched new discounts for Prime members at Whole Foods in the hopes of raising the number of Prime subscribers and Whole Foods shoppers. The new perks include exclusive savings on select products and 10% off of items already on sale, which incentivizes Prime members to shop with Whole Foods, and Whole Foods shoppers to subscribe to Prime.

There have been over 600,000 US downloads of the Whole Foods Market app since Whole Foods revealed new discounts for Prime members on May 15, 2018. To take advantage of the discounts, a Prime subscriber shopping in-store can sign into their Amazon account on the Whole Foods Market app and scan a QR code, which explains the sudden rise in downloads of the iOS and Google Play app.

Giving Prime value through the Whole Foods Market app can help Amazon twofold:
  • Prime subscribers may be drawn to Whole Foods. Fewer than 20% of Prime members are Whole Foods shoppers but the ease of signing into the app and scanning a QR code to receive discounts already paid for via their Prime subscriptions may attract non-Whole Foods shoppers to the grocer.
  • Whole Foods shoppers should be more enticed by Prime. Approximately 25% of Whole Foods shoppers aren't Prime subscribers, and the opportunity to save money on their groceries through the app may entice them to sign up for Prime.
Amazon is gearing up to push the connection between Prime and Whole Foods further on Prime Day. To incentivize consumers to make the trip to Whole Foods on Prime Day, consumers who spend at least $10 at the grocer between July 11 and July 17 will get a $10 credit to use during the event.
