As we battle one of the toughest job markets ever and with grossly high unemployment rates, most college grads are now having to compete with an entire pool of talent out there looking to land a gig - some with years of experience and tenure already under their belt.
When this writer graduated from college in 2008, she was frightfully unlearned when it came to most operational systems, platforms, devices, and programs. (As an English major, you can get by pretty well using just Microsoft Word on a coffee-stained Mac.) Even since that year, there have been such significant changes in the way technology plays a role in our professional lives that it is imperative now more than ever before for college graduates to have a basic understanding of how some technological elements work. Here are the three most important ones, for starters:


Recent events surrounding former phone-making titan, Research In Motion, the company behind the BlackBerry, have spawned some chatter. But a recent report suggests the handset line of Research In Motion may have at least a couple of potential buyers.

According to the Center of Disease Control, as of April 2012 a mere two months ago, one in every 10 U.S. adults were considered depressed, a mental illness that if left untreated could have many negative effects.
Residents in Colorado Springs are being forced to make the impossible decision of what to leave behind as they abandon their homes in the path of an aggressive wildfire. Firefighters are still struggling to contain the blaze as nearly 35,000 people are forced to evacuate.
Technology conferences are anything but dull these days. Who would've thought that skydiving, rappelling and the Google I/O developer conference would ever be used in the same sentence?
With 400 million Android activations to date and more than one million devices lighting up each day, Google continues to innovate and improve on its services and products. Its annual I/O developers conference kicked off today with the announcement of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the Nexus 7 tablet and the Nexus Q home entertainment system.
Headquartered in Dearborn, Mich., Ford Motor Company was founded in 1903 by Henry Ford and is currently touted as the second largest U.S-based automaker and the fifth largest in the world. With the intention of keeping its wheels far ahead of its competitors, the company recently revealed its plan to seamlessly integrate driver-assist technology into cars us mere mortals can actually afford.
