I’m sure you can find a good use for this Real Life NO Sign

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 04:57 PM PDT

This NO Sign somehow manages to merge two fads of the early eighties into something that is still contemporary.

The fads I am referring to is that negation sign that was already on a lot of road signs before it made Ghostbusters the most recognizable logos in all of movie history. That film came out in 1984, and, during that time, there was a small fad of 3D. Yes, there was a lot of 3D movies that came out then, just like there are now. I remember most of these 3D films getting a lot of bad press like Jaws 3D, Space Hunter, Amityville 3D, and Metalstorm.

This NO sign is a sign of the a former time, but it is downright useful for our time. After all, we have areas where cameras and cell phones are not allowed, and that one with the cigarettes could apply to any time except the boardrooms on Mad Men.

This particular novelty sign can be purchased at the Book of Joe for a modest price of $19.90. That is pretty good, considering it is just a sign with an elastic strap to put a device the size of a hand in there. Right now, I’m trying to think of what I would put in the strap. Maybe I would put a small stuffed monkey in there, because I don’t really like monkeys.

Augmented reality helmet shows you bad weather on a sunny day

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 04:32 PM PDT

There’s nothing I like more than the application of augmented reality, especially when mixed with a healthy doses of VR.

What you are seeing here in the picture and the video after the jump is an Augmented Reality Weather helmet from Magic Vision Lab. Using a head tracker and some particle graphics, the user can see what inclement weather would look like in real-time on clear and sunny day.

As you watch the video, you can see the snow fall, but it is falling from a blue sky. The same goes for the hail, but it looks a bit more realistic as the hail can actually be seen staying on the grass. I wonder how long it would take before the ground turns white. Could it do the bad weather over time?

As for the rain, it comes in three forms, one is a small drizzle, the other is a light shower, and then the last being heavy rain. What really amazed me is how it can do stormy weather, with thunder and lightning.

Now, I am not really certain what you would use this for. I suppose it could be used to show what bad whether looks like for making video games. However, I would think that video game designers already know this.

REETI the robot can show its emotions

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 03:58 PM PDT

I know some of us never want robots to ever have emotions, but I suppose that no one has any qualms about creating a robot that could show emotions.

This is the desktop robot known as REETI, and I am not certain what it stands for, but it is a communication robot and a multi-media tool that could be used to convey a very particular type of message. You can watch the video after the jump if you want to get an idea of how this works.

The software for REETI allows the user to program emotions and the facial expressions, for the motions of the eyes, ears, and mouth. This can even be done from the iPhone or the iPad. It even has three touch sensors, which allows for the colors in the face to change.

I honestly think that this is pretty incredible, as I think we all know that the plain text from an email or text message can be of questionable as far as emotion is concerned. Have you ever read a message and thought someone was angry when they weren’t? I am assuming this is why emoticons were created.

However, when it comes to the face, there are thousands of combinations to show a great depth of emotions. The REETI is there to convey this. It is Ubuntu-powered, and has an Atom Dual Core 1.8Ghz processor, 500 GB HDD, two 720p cameras (one in each eye), three USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, microphone, speaker, as well as HDMI interface, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet.

Ford Motor Company Building Digital Child Crash Dummies

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 11:01 AM PDT

Ford Motor Company is set to begin one of the world’s first research projects to build a digital human model of a child with lifelike re-creations of bones, internal organs and brains in order to enhance the company's future safety research.

Researchers are constructing the digital model, as they did the adult version, component by component – brain, skull, neck, ribcage, upper and lower extremities, etc. After gathering data through medical scans as well as anatomical texts, the researchers will build the model section by section, recreating regions of the body from childrens MRIs and CAT scans in order to obtain child geometry and basic body information so they may better understand how crash forces affect children and adults differently.

The work is the next step in Ford’s decade-long research to build sophisticated and detailed computerized ADULT human models, with body parts and organs painstakingly replicated so that scientists could better understand what was happening to the adult human body in a crash. Researchers started the project after monitoring and studying injury trends for children, who are generally much more vulnerable in automobile crashes.

The components are created and then joined into a virtual human body, which is extensively validated. Then, using mathematical and analytical tools combined with available body data, researchers will be able to determine the effects of a crash as well as the pressure of a restraint system, on the body.

Flame Hand Warmers

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 06:30 AM PDT

The bitter cold of winter is over for those who live in the northern hemisphere, but there are our friends in New Zealand as well as Australia who will be experiencing winter soon. Regardless, it is always good to be prepared with a good pair of gloves as it might get too cold for your fingers to type if you’re a blogger, but if you don’t like to take off your gloves and put them on again each time you want to use your touchscreen phone, then the £5.99 Flame Hand Warmers could be an alternative solution.

This hand warmer will make sure your fingers remain nice and toasty no matter how low the mercury drops, and since it relies on a form of gel which will generate heat the moment it crystalizes, you need not fret about toting around batteries or worry about said batteries dying. All it takes is a simple click of a button, where you will be able to experience heat at 54 Celsius for up to 45 minutes.

Navteq to use their maps in select Panasonic Lumix cameras

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 05:30 AM PDT

Navteq is definitely a name that many of you have heard of before if you’re familiar with GPS navigation devices, as the company does offer its fair share of maps that ain’t too shabby to say the least. Well, the world of consumer electronics does seem to move towards another level of convergence with digital cameras, too, entering the GPS fray.

Of course, we already have geotagging going on for some time, but the newest Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TZ20/ZS10 and DMC-FT3/TS3 digital cameras will benefit from Navteq’s map and location content.

The cameras mentioned are the latest members of Panasonic’s acclaimed Lumix Series of digital cameras, where with the help of Navteq, you can geographically organize your photos in an effortless manner, letting you determine the exact location of where the photo was taken and when. Apart from that, there is also a timestamp feature that lets you determine the precise date and time a photo was taken.

With Navteq location content, cameras and camcorders are able to geotag photos and images straight to points of interest (POI) data from the Navteq map courtesy of image detection, where determining a POI is as easy as basing on its structure latitude and longitude. Since both the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20/ZS10 and DMC-FT3/TS3 comes with an integrated GPS (Global Positioning System) function, that’s a snap to do.

All images can be geotagged automatically courtesy of the aforementioned POI data, and it is also equally easy to share those snapshots with friends and families. If you’re toying with the idea of purchasing a new digital camera, then you might want to consider the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20/ZS10 and DMC-FT3/TS3 as they become available globally from this month onwards, save for China. No idea on pricing or availability as at press time though, so we’re guessing you need to be patient and sit things out.

Nexus Silent Mouse SM-7000B

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Are you one who tends to work late into the night? If the answer is in the affirmative, then the Nexus Silent Mouse SM-7000B is the solution that you (and your poor spouse) has been searching for all this while. After all, some of us require complete silence (save for the hum of the air conditioner or heater) to get some shuteye, so the constant clicking of a keyboard as well as mouse clicks (especially if you’re into RTS) might just drive you nuts.

Enter the Nexus Silent Mouse SM-7000B, where its name is pretty much self-explanatory. This particular peripheral will work in tandem with an advanced 2.4G wireless optical mouse that will not come with the annoying clicking noise, where it remains connected to your notebook and desktop via an extremely small nano receiver.

The switches that are used in the Nexus Silent Mouse have been patented, so you (and your ears) can rest assure that the famous “click” sound won’t be there whenever you press the buttons. OF course, it might take some getting used to at first (just like a silent keyboard) since you might be too used to some noise, but the end result is well worth the entry price.

According to Michael van der Jagt of Nexus Technology, “You will be amazed how much more relaxing it is when you get rid of this useless sound. We have many tv and radio studio customers that have been pushing us for this product and we notice that it is appreciated by home and office users also.”

Good thing tactile feedback is still there to make you feel as though you’ve elevated your productivity to the next level. The Nexus Silent Mouse will come with a comfortable size, and is touted to be perfect for desktop use. The nano receiver is also small enough to keep it plugged in without having to be removed even when you stash away your notebook.

A convenient 1000/1600 DPI selection switch is also there to change the mouse speed on the fly, where you can have it be fast when required, and slow down if accuracy is the name of the game.

Let Firefox Mobile sync your Bookmarks on your Android phone

Posted: 30 Mar 2011 09:16 PM PDT

I think is it terrific to have an Android phone with access to an Internet Browser, but I don’t have access to the Bookmarks on my laptop.

That is, until now. With Firefox 4, I can sync my bookmarks with my Android phone, and I would like to tell you how after the jump.

First, you are going to need Firefox 4, normally there is automatic updates, but it didn’t seem happen for me on my laptop. Go ahead and check the Help section and see what version you have now, and then that should update it.

Second, go to the Android marketplace on your mobile phone and download the Firefox App software.

Third, once Firefox 4 is on your computer, go to the Tools section and click Options. You will see a Sync button, and click on it. This should start the setup, and you will need to enter in your email address.

Fourth, open the App on your Android phone. You should see three codes that are a mixture of letters and numbers. Go ahead and enter those in on your computer.

Now, you should be able to access Firefox on your Android phone, but the Bookmarks won’t show up for another half-hour or so. However, they will be there eventually, and you can use them.

I highly suggest using this, and leave a comment if I have left anything out. It does work for an Android phone, but I’m not certain what version it is compatible with. I have version 2.2 (Froyo) on mine, and it works well.

Genius MousePen M508W unveiled

Posted: 30 Mar 2011 06:47 PM PDT

Genius has released their MousePen M508W for those living in North America – yes, that means the US as well as Canada. This is a 5″ x 8″ wireless graphic-design tablet which will connect to a notebook or desktop through a USB receiver, working over the 2.4GHz wireless technology spectrum. Of course, with that connection, you are able to move around without any interference, and Genius intends to target the M508W at art teachers, students and graphic-design professionals, offering them wireless freedom to paint, draw, write, and edit.

Sporting a high-performance stylus that is tilt sensitive ±60 degrees and comes with 1024 pressure levels (the latter is normal), it is a snap to make the right brush strokes, whether they are meant to be thicker or thinner, as it all depends on how hard the stylus is pressed. Graphic-design professionals will also find that the MousePen M508W will offer one a similar experience as that of using paint and canvas.

Since it is called a MousePen, just how does it fare as a mouse? The left button for instance, is a simple push down with a right-click button and scroll button located near the tip along the side. The stylus will move across the 4000 LPI high-resolution contact area as though the display and tablet were the same, letting everything run smoothly and accurately.

You can opt to switch between the 5″ x 8″ contact area to a 4:3 wide screen contact area if the need arises. With a quartet of express keys (Desktop, Flip 3D, Page Up, Page Down) available for easy navigation, you will also find that the M508W comes with an LED power and low-battery indicator. The presence of 13 programmable hot cells make it a snap to create customized Office and Internet shortcuts that are located along the top of the contact area. Of course, for £19.99 a pop, this would make for a pretty interesting piece of conversation in your living room whenever you host a social event, where it is also capable of functioning as its own bedside lamp, providing a soothing environment that is perfect for sleeping after a hard night of partying.
