We braved the cold of this past week’s winter storm to visit TMC. Scott Kargman, Crossfire Media’s COO, opted to make the journey in one of his GM vehicles, which is interesting because although he usually drives an all-terrain four-wheel-drive vehicle, he instead opted for the GM car that day for one simple reason: The OnStar app that starts the car warmed the seats and defrosted the windows, all before he even got into the vehicle to begin his drive.
Sometimes it is the simple conveniences that make an implementation valuable.
In the meantime, TMC’s Alan Urkawich and Joe Fabiano now have mood lighting in their office. Alan pulls up the lamp app on his iPhone and uses it to turn off the lights, and then laughs at me when I touch the lamp in an attempt to turn the light back on.
At DevCon5 last week, Margret Schmidt of TIVO made some great points about app developments. Tivo’s Peanut Remote offers a simple, easy-to-use interface, including a big yellow pause button in the middle because that is the button most often used. In making its TiVo app, the goal was not to replicate the Peanut Remote but the convenience of that pause button.
At Luca’s, one of my local delis, the point of sale is an iPad with a Bluetooth cash register drawer. I asked the owner about this solution, and he beamed, telling me that he looked at several and chose the one he is using based on ease of use.
