The Internet of Things (IoT) is more than just a buzzword; it’s a trend transforming almost every part of our lives, from healthcare and fitness to our homes, cars, devices and businesses surrounding us. PTC, a computer software company and provider of technology solutions for manufacturers, recently acquired M2M platform ThingWorx for $112 million to help support manufacturers creating and servicing smart, connected products, positioning PTC as a major player in the Internet of Things.
The PTC deal also includes a possible earn-out of up to $18 million, according to a company statement. The company will use the ThingWorx platform to enable customers to provide a secure, reliable connection for their products, rapidly develop, maintain and operating applications and speed up the creation of high-value IoT applications.
ThingWorx has been involved in M2M and the Internet of Things since 2009, and since has developed its development platform, which combines the functionality of Web 2.0, search, and social collaboration, and applies it to the world of "things," including connected products, machines, sensors, and industrial equipment.
