As one of the most popular songs of the holidays, Deck the Halls, goes, Tis the season to be jolly! It is also the time of the year for everyone to make predictions. In fact, in the tech world making predictions is seemly an occupational necessity and as a result my inbox has been flooded with prognostications about Everything.
Every year about this time, research houses make their New Year's predictions. Not wanting to be left out, Frost and Sullivan weighed in on the near term future of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry. The research house actually sees a tough year ahead, with many ICT providers having trouble just keeping their market share.
We have gone through several patent infringement lawsuits lately. This is supposed to be the season of being of good cheer. However, on Christmas Eve Google announced that it is taking Rockstar to court.
Despite the fact that almost all retailers in the U.S. closed their physical stores on Christmas Day, it turns out that thanks to the Internet this did not stop many Americans from engaging in what is the true national pastime at this time of the year, SHOPPING. It is up to you as to whether you think this is a good or bad thing. As the saying goes, Like it or not, it is what it is.
It is obvious enough why mobile service providers face serious commercial challenges from over the top messaging apps including Facebook Messenger, Google Talk, iMessage, LINE, Skype, Viber and WhatsApp.
There's good news and some short term bad news in the online commerce business around the important Christmas shopping season in the United States.
Target has managed to become the poster child for security ire, having lost around 40 million credit and debit cards. It's the latest documented breech of credit card security. Financial institutions have to be thinking how to migrate away from the increasingly exploited system of numbers, plastic and mag stripes, especially as lawsuits start arriving.

As we wrap up a solid year for the mobile device market, one particular trend that accelerated with fierce momentum is the adoption of mobile apps within businesses. Yet, rewind back to today and you'll see businesses continue to use stock apps for their day-to-day communication functions like voice and test, effectively constraining corporate data within an information silo where there is very little wiggle room for growth, security or flexibility. However the forecast is already changing and will even more so in 2014, as more apps targeted to business users are created, allowing them and their customers to communicate instantly, while satisfying enterprise requirements, like security.
