We have a tendency to think about smart grid when we talk about SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition). The reality is SCADA has a much greater reach and has been going through its own evolution.
SCADA’s strength is in its ability to support multiple locations and processes including facilities and industrial systems. SCADA systems can be used for a variety of deployments as shown below.
Manufacturing | Power Generation |
Water Treatment | Oil & Gas Pipelines |
Waste Water Treatment | Refining |
Airport & Shipyards | HVAC & Energy Consumption |
Many of these deployments represent services offered by municipalities. It was for that reason I listened to SkyWave's webinar about SCADAconnect, which features a case study about municipal services.
SCADAconnect is an implementation of more than a single product because it is composed of asset gateway, communication device and enterprise gateway. The asset gateway interfaces to the SCADA Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) or Intelligent Edge Device (IED), and manages business rules with only mission-critical data. SkyWave provides the ability to use satellite with its IsatData Pro network and terminals, and the ability to use cellular service as well. In effect, SkyWave delivers redundancy in this way and also supports remote deployments. Finally the enterprise gateway aggregates the information, enabling analysis and management...Read More
