Fully understand ICO funding with this chart.
| New Chart & Data: Fintech | | ICO funding was more than 5x greater than conventional equity funding in Q3… Despite a number of regulators warning against initial coin offerings (ICOs), and a few going so far as to ban them outright, the fundraising method continues to gather pace, according to data from CB Insights. ICOs typically involve a firm selling individual units, often called tokens or coins, of a proprietary cryptocurrency in exchange for a more established cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin or Ether, in order to raise equity funding. The proprietary cryptocurrencies either run on a blockchain-based platform built by the firm raising money, or on a public platform such as Ethereum or Bitcoin's Blockchain.
| | | | Here are some other key points from the study: - Funding for blockchain firms from ICOs was more than 5x greater than that from traditional funding sources in Q3 2017.
- That spectacular growth was likely driven by increased awareness of ICOs among blockchain firms looking to raise money, and potential investors whose interest was initially piqued by the explosion in value of major cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin.
- Funding raised from ICOs reached $1.3 billion in Q3, compared with just $259 million raised from more typical sources of equity.
- And while the latter was relatively flat from Q2 2017, funding from ICOs nearly doubled between Q2 and Q3.
