President Donald Trump caught his own intelligence community off-guard over the weekend when he told reporters that he believed Russian President Vladimir Putin when he said that he was sure Russia didn't meddle in the 2016 election. The president called former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, former FBI Director James Comey, and former CIA Director John Brennan "political hacks" and characterized the Russia investigation as a hoax dreamed up by Democrats.
The backlash was swift, and Trump slightly walked back his comments on Sunday morning. He told reporters he meant that he believes "that Putin believes" Russia did not interfere, and that he stands with the assessment made by "our intelligence agencies" about Russia's activities last year. Still, he said that Russia has already been "heavily sanctioned" and suggested that Moscow should not be subjected to further punishment by the US.
The New York Times, meanwhile, revealed the identity of the "senior policy adviser" described in the George Papadopoulos court filings: Stephen Miller, who is currently a top White House aide and speechwriter to Trump. Papadopoulos emailed Miller, who has been interviewed by special counsel Robert Mueller, several times during the election — including the day after he learned that Russia had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton.
