Whether particular products are best sold on a metered or un-metered basis is an important question for service providers. Sometimes one approach makes more sense than the other, and sometimes the approach changes with the product lifecycle.
At some point in the future, Elon may decided to go big again, producing high power-efficient solar panels for use in spacecraft, to serve as the keystone to solar farms across the country to feed Tesla recharging stations and high-density roof power for office buildings and factories. More efficient solar panels could be rolled into existing SolarCity customers as older panels age out, providing more power per square foot to be either used, stored, or resold.
The North American communications market is evolving rapidly as a new, cloud-based dynamic is taking hold: services are increasingly simple applications delivered via an IP-based connection, whether wired or wireless. So, future residential bundles are unlikely to be quad plays (i.e., voice, video, Internet access and wireless), but rather a dual-play of landline and wireless broadband, over the top of which all else is delivered.
