Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack was determined to be a “rainmaker” this past week–making two attempts; one of them, successful.
· At a stump speech in Temple, Texas, on July 12, he increased the cash flow to rural cooperatives and utilities in 15 states—announcing that they will receive a cumulative $287 million in loan guarantees to make improvements to generation and transmission facilities and implement smart grid technologies. (Winning!)
· Several days later, on June 18, he told reporters at the White House that he is praying for rain to end the drought parching 61 percent of the United States. “I get on my knees every day,” he said. “And I’m saying an extra prayer now. If I had a rain prayer or a rain dance I could do, I would do it.” (Still waiting!)
With the most recent distribution of funding, USDA Rural Development moves closer to reaching Secretary Vilsack’s goal to provide more than $250 million for smart grid technologies, alone.
