Video, High-Speed Internet Drives 100 Gbps and 4G LTE Rollouts in Rural America

The growth in demand for rich, multimedia content on multiple devices, particularly the exploding population of smartphones and tablets and the need to support quality video, is driving the rollout of 100 Gbps and 4G LTE networks in rural America.   The race by operators even in less populated regions of the country to be first and fast in their markets with 100Gbps and 4G LTE solutions has gotten a big boost from Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) as deployments in Vermont, and New Mexico and Texas highlight.  


For example, a recent Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) announcement showed how Vermont Telephone (VTel), one of the largest family-owned telephone companies in the U.S., is dramatically expanding availability of superfast broadband services, including IPTV (News - Alert) and video-on-demand, using 100Gbps technology.  The ALU solution for VTel includes: 

  • 100G optical coherent technology, based on Alcatel-Lucent’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS)
  • 7750 Service Router
  • OmniSwitch 9800E Metro Ethernet switch

ALU has also been selected as the integrator of VTel’s IPTV service, which runs on the Microsoft Mediaroom™ solution. In addition, network management capabilities are provided by Alcatel-Lucent’s 5620 Service Aware (News - Alert) Manager, and the deployment was supported by the company’s engineering and installations services team...
