Nintendo DS Keeps 100-Year Old Grandmother's Mind Sharp


“If there’s any secret to a long life,” says Kathleen Connell, “it’s to think positive and keep your mind active.” The 100-year old grandmother is doing just that, but not in the way that you may expect.


When Kathleen Connell turned 96, her daughter gave her a Nintendo DS console. Now, Connell spends at least two hours per day drawing pictures and solving puzzles on games like Brain Trainer, Scrabble and Art Academy. Connell is on her second console, since she wore out the first one, and says that the games are the reason she doesn’t feel a day over 80.


Studies have long shown that reading and playing games like Bingo help the elderly to keep their minds active. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign also found that playing video strategy games helped seniors to score better on tests involving task switching, working memory and reasoning ability. Seniors who took part in the testing played “Rise of Nations,” and those who played at least 24 hours over a 5-week period showed the most cognitive improvement... Read More
