Portal 2 Comic Launches Tomorrow

In the build up to the launch of their new game Portal 2 Valve is releasing a new Portal comic book, which has been created in house and will be shown in conjunction with IGN who will be hosting the new comic book pages.

The comic will fill in the considerable time gaps between the two games and will feature a new "much-rumored yet never seen character,".  The comic has been created with the help of Portal co-creator, Michael Avon Oeming.

Fujifilm To Release FinePix X200 And X300 With Interchangeable Lens (Rumor)

Some of our readers will remember the Fujifilm Finepix X100 that we featured on Geeky Gadgets previously, as the FinePix X100 has been a success for Fujifilm it seems they have some other models planned.

There are rumors that Fujifilm will release two other models to compliment the FinePix X100, the Fixepix X200 which will be a point and shoot version of the X100 and a FinePix X300 which will be a pro version with interchangeable lenses.

Lego Lunchbox Looks Like A Bad Idea

It really does. Remember when you used to open your lunchbox for recess and the food inside would be soggy and have no flavor at all?  Lunchboxes are a science unto themselves. A science few have mastered despite decades of compulsory schooling that have called for the use of a lunchbox. No wonder Ziploc sandwiches are so freaking popular.

Samsung Gets Smart, Cuts Price of 3D Glasses and More

I have long said one of the big reasons that consumers are staying away from 3D TVs and 3D in the home is that the TV makers were too greedy and tried to over charge for the tech and especially the glasses. If you bought a 3D TV from most makers you would need to buy more 3D glasses for a family to watch because only one pair at best came with the sets.

Orbotix Sphero Robotic Ball Lands $5 Million Investment For Production (video)

The Sphero Robotic Ball controlled by your smartphone which we featured back in December last year and was showcased at CES this year. Has now raised $5 million in Series B financing from Foundry Group and Highway 12 Ventures, allowing it to make the jump from concept into production.

Any iOS or Android smartphone will be able to control the Sphero Ball via a simple Bluetooth connection. Developers will also be able to create their own programs and games for the robotic ball using the open API on offer. Watch a video of the Orbotix Sphero Robotic Ball in action after the jump.

Vlix Adds Slow Motion Effects And More To Your iPhone Videos

A new video effects iPhone applications currently on its way through Apples approval process, promises the ability to add special effects to your iPhone movies with ease, and I am always a sucker for a bit of super slo-mo footage.

The new application called Vlix created by SpotMixer combines mobile sharing features with sophisticated video editing functionality. The Vlix application also allows users to use a "Create" tab to upload and share their own clips with friends or followers, or easily post them to Facebook, YouTube or the web, for others to view.

T-Mobile G2x Coming April 15th For $199

T-Mobile has announced the launch date and pricing for the LG G2X, it will be available on T-Mobile from the 15th of April 2011, and will cost $199.99 on a new two year contract after a $50 mail in rebate.

As a reminder, the T-Mobile G2x will come with a 4 inch capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 480 x 80 pixels, and processing is provided by a dual core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, and it comes with Android 2.2 Froyo.

AVG Launches LiveKive Online Cloud Storage

AVG’s LiveKive service which been put through its paces lately in a beta release, has now made the jump to production and has officially been launched by AVG today. LiveKive is a safe and reliable cloud-based storage, sync and share solution similar to Dropbox, Sugarsync and Amazon's Cloud Drive to name a few.

AVG LiveKive offers consumers three tiers of secure encrypted storage options, ranging from a free 5GB offering, as well as two paid versions providing either 25GB or unlimited storage but as always with usage limits. iOS applications are also available to manage your files, and ABG is currently offering a 30 day trial of its new service.

Microsoft Bing iPad App Released

Microsoft has released a new version of their Bing app, and this one is designed for the Apple iPad, and it comes with a range of new features, which lets you view news articles, search for photos, check out movie listings and lots more.

Other new features in the Bing for iPad app include weather, stock quotes, Bing Maps, and even voice search, and you can view websites that you search for within the Bing app.

20 Years Of Linux 1991 – 2011 Celebration Video

Linux is 20 years old this summer and over the past twenty years has grown from a hobby code into the Linux operating system we rely on today, now running on 95 percent of the world’s super computers we use for daily communications.

Linux is literally everywhere: in your phone, at your ATM, in your TV, on your desktop, at the movies and in your car to name just a few places.

Twenty years ago Linus Torvalds made a bold decision to share his operating system with the world, and then chose to license it under the General Public License, changing the world of computing forever. Watch a video of Linux history unfold after the jump.

Apple’s Smart Bezel Patent Could Add Secondary Display To iPhone And iPad

We have seen some patents previously from Apple about a smart bezel for iOS devices, but a new one has just been revealed, and the details look very interesting.

The latest patent for an Apple Smart Bezel, would see Apple using the bezel as a secondary display, which uses a printed segmented electroluminescent display, and this would be used to show illuminated indicators on the bezel.

HP webOS 3.0 Screenshots Show Off Bings Maps And Music App

We have already had a brief preview of HP’s new webOS 3.0, which we will be the OS used in their new HP TouchPad Tablet, and now they guys over at Pre-Central have got their hands on some more UI screenshots of webOS 3.0.

The photos below show off some of the new features in webOS 3.0, which include Bing Maps, the browser and the virtual keyboard, plus messaging, and also the webOS music app.

Apple Patent Reveals Combination LCD, E-paper Display Concepts

A newly published Apple patent has revealed designs of a display concept that combines both LCD and E-paper within the same display. The patent application, that was made public this week, was first filed by Apple back in October of 2009.

The patent submitted by Apple titled "Systems and Methods for Switching Between an Electronic Paper Display and a Video Display". Details a layered display sandwich concept which uses a combination of traditional LCD and e-paper screens to segment the display.

Allowing sections of the new display to either use LCD or E-paper as required, which could then be used to show video in the top half of the display using LCD and text within the bottom half using e-paper. .

Logitech Zagg iPad 2 Keyboard Case

Some of our readers will remember the Zaggmate iPad keyboard case that was available for the first generation iPad last year, there is now a new version available for the iPad 2, although this one is made by both Zagg and Logitech.

The New Logitech iPad 2 keyboard case looks very similar to the first one for the original iPad, although the new version has been designed to fit the new slimmer design of the iPad 2.

Samsung Galaxy S Android 2.3 Gingerbread Update Coming This Month

Owners of the Samsung Galaxy S will be pleased to know that Samsung has announced that the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Galaxy S will be released this month.

Samsung released the information on the Finnish Samsung website, and apparently the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update is in the final stages of testing and Samsung has said it should be available by the middle of April.

iOS 4.3.2 To be Released Within Two Weeks?

Apple recently released the latest version of their iOS software, iOS 4.3.1, and now there is a rumor that they will release another new version of iOS, iOS 4.3.2 within the next two weeks.

According to the guys over at the BGR, iOS 4.3.2 will come with a range of security enhancements, and will also fix a range of bugs, and it is expected to be available for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch within the next two weeks.

Samsung Galaxy S II Is Arriving In April Confirms Samsung

Yesterday there were conflicting reports when the new Samsung Galaxy S II would actually arriving with Samsung India tweeting that the launch may be delayed until June.

However Samsung HQ have now confirmed via Twitter, that their new Galaxy S II smartphone will now as planned be arriving in April, but didn’t provide a specific launch date.

Google Working On Tablet Version Of Chrome OS

We have already seen Google’s Chrome OS on notebooks with the launch of the Chrome CR-48 Noetbook, and we know that certain manufacturers are working on netbooks for Google’s Chrome OS.

We have even heard that Google’s Chrome OS may launch in June of this year, and now it seems that Google is working on a tablet version of Chrome, which would put their new OS in direct competition with their own mobile OS, Android and Apple’s iOS.

Gnome 3 Next Generation Linux Desktop Launches (video)

Gnome 3 has today been launched its highly anticipated update which has been under development for the last two years. The new next generation desktop Gnome 3 is just not a successor to the Gnome 2 release but a complete redesign. The Gnome Project has started from scratch with Gnome 3 and created a completely new, modern desktop with a new Gnome Shell.

The new Gnome 3 desktop includes faster application  access, easier windows management, app-based window management and deeper hardware integration. With a complete new and uncluttered easy to use desktop. What a brief demo video after the break to see the new Gnome 3 in action.

Apple Buys 12 Petabytes Of Storage For iTunes Cloud

It looks like Apple’s rumored iTunes Cloud music and video streaming service may be getting closed to release, as it seems Apple has recently acquired some new storage from Isilon Systems.

In fact, Apple has purchased a reported 12 Petabytes of storage, and it doesn’t look like this new storage is going to be used in their new data center in North Carolina which is scheduled to go online some time in the spring.

Xbox Dashboard Beta Arrives

Microsoft has today started rolling out invitations to its new Xbox Dashboard beta preview and is now updating opted-in Xboxes with the new Dashboard preview.

Early reports are showing that there is very little to see at the moment within the new dashboard, but a new “Xbox Beta” channel has arrived. The new channel includes three new sections: “Xbox Beta Program – Preview LIVE Update,” which is currently still disabled, together with “New Features” and “Help and Tips.”

Samsung Galaxy Tab WiFi US To Retail For $349.99

Samsung has finally released the pricing and release date information for the Samsung Galaxy Tab WiFi in the US, it will go on sale in the US from the 10th of April and will retail for $349.99.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab WiFi, is a WiFi only version of the original Galaxy Tab, and it features a 7 inch touchscreen display and comes with Android 2.2 Froyo.

iRobot 110 FirstLook Spy Robot (Video)

We have featured quite a few different spy gadgets and also robots here at Geeky Gadgets, and now we have the iRobot 110 FirstLook, which is a mini spy robot that is designed to be used y the military.

The iRobot 110 FirstLook is a prototype, but should go on sale some time within the next 12 months, and it is waterproof up to about three feet and shockproof up to 15 feet, it is even capable of climbing steps and maneuvering itself over obstacles.

ZodTTD Releases PSX4Droid Free For Android

Last week we heard that the PlayStation emulator PSX4Droid had been removed from Google’s Android Market, the developer of the application mentioned that he though that the reason his application was removed was due to the launch of the new Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, and a range of PlayStation games on the Android Market.

Now ZodTTD has released a new version of PSX4Droid, and he is giving it away free from his website, and this new version is based on a different emulator than the previous version that was available in the Android Market.

Meego Tablet OS Source Released As SDK

Meego have this week announced that they are released the Meego Linux-based source code to encourage developers to take the reins and develop innovative applications and take the OS forward.

The Meego OS has been created for use on tablets, netbooks and smartphones and is an open source project led by the MeeGo Technical Steering Group (TSG) and is hosted by the Linux Foundation.

Nokia E7 Goes On Sale In The US

The Nokia E7 was due to go on sale in the US and Europe at the end of last year, the handset ended up being delayed and landed in Europe back in February and it is now available in the US.

As a reminder, the Nokia E7 features a 4 inch AMOLED display, plus a slide out QWERTY keyboard, there is also an 8 megapixel camera which can record HD video in 720p.

Tweetdeck Launches HTML5 Beta Web App

If you area fan of Tweetdeck you might like to join beta testers that are currently putting the new TweetDeck Web HTML 5 web application through its paces. The new HTML5 web app has being created to bring the popular Chrome web TweetDeck app to other web platforms.

The new Tweetdeck Web app is built on the same core as Chrome TweetDeck, with the same UI and with many of the same product features. With the main difference being that TweetDeck Web does not use Twitter streaming.

Minox Classic Mini Digital Camera

We have featured some cameras from Minox before here at Geeky Gadgets, they have mainly been small compact spy cameras, but their latest camera certainly looks very cool, and features a retro design.

Don’t expect to get amazing photos from the Minox Classic Mini Digital Camera, as it only features a 5.1 megapixel senor, and a 2 inch LCD display, plus there is also an attachable viewfinder.

It seems that Google has some new plans for the worlds most popular video service, YouTube, and the company intends to spend $100 million to create 20 new YouTube channels that will deliver original content to YouTube users.

According to a recent report by the WSJ, Google is intending to revamp YouTube with 20 new channels that will deliver 5 to 10 hours of original content each week.

Atari’s Greatest 100 Games Arrive On The iPhone

If you are short of a few classic games on your iPhone or iPad, you might be pleased to hear that Atari have launched a new iOS application that includes over 100 games from their classic line-up. With 18 Classic Atari Arcade Games including PONG and a massive 92 Atari 2600 Games.

The new application is available in the Apple iTunes Store and is free to download with a free version of PONG. You can then purchase 25 separate packs available for download at $0.99 or purchase all 100 games for $14.99. Which should keep you occupied for a few hours.

Grooveshark Gets Removed From The Android Market

Some of our readers will remember that the Grooveshark App was removed from the Apple App Store last year, just a week after it was made available, and now it seems that Google has decided to remove Grooveshark from the Android market.

Grooveshark is a music service that lets users share music with each other, and it has more than 6 million songs online and has been accused by EMI in a lawsuit of copyright violations.

Gamestop Gaming Tablet Arriving Late 2011

President Tony Bartel of games retailer Gamestop, this week confirmed reports that Gamestop are indeed considering developing their own gaming tablet for a launch late in 2011.

Gamestop are still in the early stages of development with their tablet and haven’t yet decided on whether to use an exisitng OEM tablet or creating their very own tablet, specific to their requirements. With Bartel explaining to CNBC  "But if we can't find one that's great for gaming, then we will create our own."

The image below is just a conceptual mockup but Gamestop have suggested that their new gaming tablet will include a separate Bluetooth controller.

JBL Cinema 300 And 500 Speaker Systems Announced

JBL has added two new home theater speaker systems to their line up with the launch of the JBL Cinema 300 and the Cinema 500, and both of these new 5.1 home theater speaker systems are designed to be small and each set features a 150 watt subwoofer and five satellite speakers.

Google’s Andy Rubin Says Android Is Still Open Source

Google recently announced that they intend to put an end to Android fragmentation, by making companies who want to tweak Android for their handsets get approval from Google first.

This led to a lot of criticism from companies, and many said that the Android platform was becoming less open source, although developers of applications for the Android Market will probably be happy with the move as they see Android fragmentation as a big problem.

Minecraft Hits $33 Million In Revenue

Mojang is quickly becoming the 800-pound gorilla of a scene more used to Capuchin monkeys, with today’s announcement that the ubiquitous Minecraft made the developer $33 million in total revenue. As you can imagine that the overheads weren’t exactly huge, that means a healthy chunk of that unspeakable mountain of currency is pure profit.
