Featured Articles Public Wi-Fi allows us to stay connected wherever we go. While the convenience drives us to connect more often, by no means does that indicate we're in a safe zone. And for the most part, we understand this, but do it anyway. Last week's wave of worldwide DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks through the use of unsecured Internet of Things (IoT) devices is both disturbing and revealing. Disrupting prime-time access to e-commerce and social media sites has some near-term implications, but also signaled the launch of an arms race between bad actors and the White Hat community - with the future of the IoT clearly between them. In the long run, the White Hats will win, but the question is how long it will take them. Over-the-top Web-based television seems to be the way of the future, as demonstrated by Netflix, Hulu, and a host of developments to follow, along with reports of declining cable television viewership numbers. Google's Unplugged service, meanwhile, looks to join in those ranks, and it's just added a major new draw to its operations: CBS. Once upon a time, Apple was king of hardware design, be it the desktop, laptop, or tablet. No longer. Microsoft is now the one to watch as it hones in on designing high-end PCs for power users, with the Surface Studio its best piece yet. The rest of the PC manufacturing world has yet to catch up, but it may not have to if the company continues to focus exclusively on elite design. But it's an open question if crowd-sourced designs can be more than boutique experiments where major manufacturers fear to tread. In a major shakeup on the chip market, mobile phone chipmaking titan Qualcomm is reportedly embarking on a plan to acquire a similar company, NXP Semiconductors, in an eight-figure deal that will give Qualcomm a lot of extra leverage and a better hold on markets beyond the smartphone.
