Over the past couple of years, wearables have hit the news headlines and the wrists of many consumers looking to monitor their vitals and ultimately, get healthier. Brands such as Apple have extended their range, with the launch of the Apple Watch and new brands such as Jawbone and Fitbit have been born out of the trend. Wearables aren't going anywhere either. Hardware manufacturers HP and Huawei used this year's Mobile World Congress to expand beyond their stock template and into new territory. HP is taking risks with a new phone PC while Huawei seems to be following a standard evolution path for its latest gear, with uniqueness to both company's new offerings. The big players in today's telecom world simply can't afford to hold onto legacy, proprietary network components and technologies. The Internet of Things (IoT) and the huge number of users, devices and applications it comprises, are pushing companies to seek open, interoperable networking standards and solutions that facilitate flexibility and efficiency. U.S. magistrate judge James Orenstein in Brooklyn ruled this week that the tech giant is under no compulsion to hand the Justice Department access to the contents of an iPhone belonging to a drug dealer. As the Internet of Things (IoT) revolutionizes the way consumers interact with hardware in their daily lives, security has come to the forefront-with connected cars at the vanguard of the conversation. This week Microsoft released HoloLens for order to developers to be shipped at the end of March. This is a very different device than a 3D Headset or something like Google Glass, both of which separately can do similar things but lack the ability to fully immerse the user in a blend of what is real and what is virtual-HoloLens alters reality and this is really very different. While there has been a lot of interest in gaming, the initial price of this device will likely keep it focused first on business, government, and education where the utility of the device justifies its higher price. For Apple fans, March 21 is shaping up to be one spectacular day, as a major event is scheduled that should reveal a host of new products. Not only are there new products afoot, but also some changes to previously-held strategies that will give Apple something of a new angle on an old market.
