The Internet of Things is in the air. Most recently, the industry was abuzz about a potential Google acquisition of Dropcam, a cloud-based home security system provider, and with Apple’s recent World Wide Developer Conference, the rumors are already starting about what connected devices we’ll see on the market next. Importantly, connected home security should be of special interest to security researchers. While home security systems are nothing new, the transition of the historically isolated closed-circuit TV network into a cloud-based service offering streaming over the Internet opens new doors for valuable integration with other cloud services. As news of potential acquisitions will undoubtedly continue, and as we digest the announcement of Apple’s HomeKit home automation framework at WWDC, it is important to consider the implications – specifically, when live streaming video and sensor data from homes is combined with the vast amounts of data already stored by cloud giants such as Google, what potential security and privacy considerations are introduced?
It’s not Just Science Fiction Anymore
Assuming a large cloud service provider acquires a home security company, the new data stream provided by security sensors allows for many exciting and new features and valuable integration potential. This integration would be the true realization of the Internet of Things (IoT) that we’ve all been waiting for. For example, imagine your refrigerator automatically ordering more milk from an online shopping service after checking with your home security system to ensure that delivery will happen after you return from work but before dinner. Video chats could leverage in-home security camera streams to follow you through your home as you talk with friends and family while preparing dinner. Garage doors open, wireless door locks disengage and a post to social media lets friends know you are home as the security system identifies your vehicle pulling into the driveway. And when these services all come from the same platform, the value of that integration is exponential. Read More
