Sprint's lack of mmWave holdings could make the 5G era particularly challenging
Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile are widely expected to buy the bulk of mmWave spectrum available at the ongoing Auction 103, positioning Sprint for an uncertain future.

Auction 103 is the FCC's third mmWave spectrum auction and, of those, the largest in terms of available spectrum. Sprint chose not to participate in either preceding auction.

Sprint's choice to abstain from mmWave was likely informed by its faith that the T-Mobile merger will go through – but without mmWave spectrum, a standalone Sprint will struggle to provide a compelling, comprehensive network in the 5G era.
