Competitive markets often are tough on competitors with less market share, on both revenue and cost fronts. When scale matters, having less scale than the market leaders means margin pressure and higher costs.
One year ago, Sony posted a net loss for the 2011 fiscal year due largely to weak demand for HDTVs and the strength of the yen at the time. Sony CEO Kaz Hirai's response has been to scale back its television production and double down on its mobile and gaming divisions, as well as a fair number of layoffs across various divisions.
While most 17-year-old girls I know are worrying about their upcoming prom and who just broke up with whom, Jennie Lamere is spending her time doing something just a tad different-designing code. Yes you heard me correctly, I said code. In fact, the New Hampshire -raised teen recently walked away with the grand prize in national coding competition due to her solution.
He has only been on the job several weeks, but new Alcatel-Lucent CEO Michel Combes got a baptism by fire as he addressed the company's shareholders during its annual meeting in Paris.
Congress has come up with some ideas to level the playing field between the "Brick and Mortar" stores and online retailers. The beta for Google Glass really isn't going well. Last week, it was reported the product has been hacked and that unknown strangers could get access to your camera and microphone. Most of us don't think our private moments showing up on YouTube or being watched by some twisted stranger in a darkened room is a great idea. With Saturday Night Live making fun of the product, Google Glass is reminding me a great deal of the Apple Newton, another amazing product that launched before its time and failed spectacularly.
Since the earliest days of the Internet, parents have been concerned about their children's ability to get access to inappropriate material. It was the reason a thriving part of the anti-virus/anti-malware suites included parental controls over their youngsters surfing habits. However, the challenge with the proliferation of smartphones, tablets and mobile applications (apps) is that there is rising concern about the unreliability of content maturity ratings for mobile apps.
LinkedIn turns 10 years old today. I don't know about you, but I was an early user of the business-oriented social network, and have found LinkedIn to be an invaluable way to network professionally and socially. Indeed, the company in many ways is responsible for popularizing the term "social network" despite its business orientation.
