SAP - at least for me - is one of those sometimes larger than life players with its hands on many, many plates - including a very new effort to help wireless carriers unlock deeply buried strategic information from their subscriber databases.
Consumers interact with brands now more than ever and there is a huge player to thank: social media. On Vine, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr, YouTube and more, companies are accumulating thousands of followers and in turn, an enormous opportunity to grow their customer base and relationships.
It is arguable that few entities know more about small and medium business (SMB) IT than Austin, TX-based Spiceworks. With more than 2.5 million users of its app for managing "Everything IT" for SMBs and over 1,800 advertisers, the company has its finger on the pulse of what is going on with SMBs. It is why its semi-annual survey of roughly 1,000 users worldwide is a must read. The latest survey is now available for download. For anyone interested in what is on the minds of SMB IT professionals and where they are and are not spending money, you might wish to get your hands on the full report.

Just over a month ago, we did a little exploration of the PC marketplace courtesy of IDC and a report it published based on preliminary data that essentially noted that the PC market is in a state of slow decline. As we noted in our own "decline of the PC market" commentary, there is hardly any surprise here - the PC market is a long-mature industry that is now saturated. We also noted that the "decline and urgency of concern for a dying industry" was greatly overstated and was being needlessly exaggerated.
While Facebook serves as a social networking website in which we can pretty much virtually "stalk" whomever we choose (as long as their profile is public), some users have taken a much darker approach to the platform, creating pages to advertise to the masses all over the world that the brutal treatment of women ranging from being beaten, raped and even killed is acceptable. Activists are now taking the steps needed to put an end to the countless pages that are still live highlighting these horrific incidents once and for all.
It seems that every day there are new revelations about significant cyber attacks that impact national security where the trail leads back to China. Just this past week saw the revelation that Chinese hackers gained access to secret designs of key U.S. weapons systems, and stole the blueprints for Australia's new intelligence agency headquarters.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has become a master of the subtle art of lowering expectations, hinting about new technology without ever revealing what exactly Apple has up its sleeve, dropping hints of potentially strategic misdirection and eliciting an always earnest sounding "gee whiz, you'll be amazed at what game changing stuff we've got coming just a bit down the road that we've been working on for some time."
