As more and more business is done online, organizations need to regularly assess whether their PKI is adequate for supporting security demands. Whether an organization owns its own Certificate Authority, or uses a private or public outsourced service, a PKI is only as valuable as the trust it can deliver.
The problem for many organizations is that the PKIs they originally deployed to support relatively low-value operations may no longer be suitable. For example, it is common to hang more and more business applications off a PKI. A good case in point is in the rise of the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) phenomenon. With more and more employees working from home on their own devices, a business must evaluate whether its PKI is capable of supporting the plethora of smartphones, tablets and laptops connecting to the network.
