Operation game gets a Star Wars Makeover

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 11:44 AM PDT

I suppose that the game of Operation needs no introduction. That game where players attempt to pluck out plastic things and avoid a buzzer has now been given a Star Wars look.

It is appropriate that Hasbro has put this out, as they have the rights to Operation and Star Wars toys. For some odd reason, R2-D2 is on the slab, and it would appear that C3PO is the surgeon. In all honesty, I think both of the droids sustained equal amounts of injury in the Star Wars series. I suppose this is why the players can pull things out of C3PO as well.

You should see the things that you can pull out of this thing, which include a hiccuping hologram, a bad motivator, an overweight blob of grease, and other Star Wars references. For example, there is a lodged lightsaber that would have seriously caused some trouble in Return of the Jedi if R2-D2 didn’t launch it at Luke Skywalker in time.

In case you are wondering, this isn’t the first time that Operation has had a makeover. We already covered the Hulk version, and I believe Iron Man also received its own version, based on that scene where Tony Stark removes his old miniature arc reactor.

RePro3D system lets users play with and touch digital 3D characters

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 11:08 AM PDT

This is the RePro3D system, and it is under development by Keio University in Japan.

My Source calls it a miniature holodeck, but I don’t believe that this is an accurate description. You can see in the video after the jump what it actually is, and it combines several technologies.

The user looks into this box, and projectors create a naked-eye 3D fairy character. An infrared camera tracks the users hands, and that device that you see in the photo is for haptic feedback. It reminds me of those devices we discussed yesterday that could be used for virtual video game stabbings and shootings.

The video explains how the creators were inspired by video game characters, but they seemed “lonely” inside the video screens. The designers wanted to create more interactivity in the 3D world, and you can watch someone playing with a green fairy on a tiny seesaw in the video.

The designers also hope that they will make it possible for two users to interact with a virtual character in the future. If they perfect that process, then I would imagine that these designers are going to have something bigger and better than the 3DS. I think that Nintendo needs to invest in this, and let gamers interact with Pokemon.

Case-Mate accidentally posts iPhone 5 cases early (Whoops!)

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 10:32 AM PDT

We have reported on Case-Mate before, and they make cases for a lot of mobile gadgets. A few months ago, we reported on Case-Mate’s contribution to the iPad 2.

It would appear that Case-Mate is trying to be current, and they might have jumped the gun. Case-Mate accidentally posted their cases for the iPhone 5 earlier today, even though the official announcement won’t be until mid-October. As you might have guessed, the company took the page with the new cases down. I can imagine the panic attack that the Case-Mate execs had after they learned that the posts for the iPhone 5 cases had gone live.

I can testify to the quality of Case-Mate’s products, and something tells me what happened was a simple mistake. I hope it isn’t a deliberate leak like I have been suspecting lately with iPhone prototypes.

I’m guessing that the Case-Mate catalog programmers were prepping for the October release, and accidentally hit the “Publish” button when they should have hit the “Save as Draft” button. It happens to bloggers all the time, believe me.

Apparently, Case-Mate had seven models of these iPhone 5 cases on display today. They certainly look pretty nice, and it is too bad that my Sources don’t have a price for them.

Wanna get pregnant? Get a Nokia

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 06:30 AM PDT

Don’t you just find it to be ironic that there are folks out there who are trying their darndest best to start a family, while others go to abortion clinics simply because they aren’t ready to face up to the responsibility of being a parent, and yet want to have fun on the sidelines. Well, if you have tried all sorts of remedies and taken in more advice on getting pregnant than you thought you ever would, how about giving it (listening to advice) one more shot?

Nokia might have the solution for you – thanks to a next generation app on the Ovi Store. After all, medical science has proved that before one can conceive, it would be prudent to make sure that both parents are in good health, so to have a Body Mass Index Calculator on your handset would definitely be a good thing as it lets you know what your ideal body weight should be, and as you work towards that figure, experts think that it would also be far easier to conceive then.

I am quite sure that other smartphone platforms will most probably have a similar app, but let’s give Nokia a chance now, shall we? It isn’t to say that their phones turned bad overnight – no sir, but rather, it seems that the competitors of the Finnish handset company had become extremely good over the past few years.

Apart from making sure you have your ideal body weight, smoking might be an issue as well. Quitting those cigarettes are easier said than done, and if you want to quit but can’t quite come to terms with that concept just yet, perhaps the No Smoking app would be of assistance, and the Diet Log is more than capable of helping you track your nutrition habits by giving charts with weekly and monthly averages so that you can monitor and evaluate your well-being. Heck, the more meticulous among you can even record each time you drink a glass of water, eat a slice of bread or soak up some sugar.

The Period Tracker and Menstruation and Fertility app will target the (obviously) female demographic, since it tracks cycles and delivers predictions on your dates, so that you are able to know when the body is at its most fertile stage.

Now that you’re armed and ready with your Nokia smartphone, it is time to find that hunk of a doctor…

Jabra SUPREME Bluetooth mono headset

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 06:00 AM PDT

Jabra is an old hand when it comes to Bluetooth headsets as well as devices, but that does not mean the company should rest on their laurels. No sir, in fact Jabra always pushes the envelope – and their latest release, the SUPREME Bluetooth mono headset, is no different from its ‘ancestors’. What makes the Jabra SUPREME so special from the rest? For starters, this will be the first non-stereo headset that incorporates Active Noise Cancellation which will block out noisy environments.

That alone will work in tandem with Noise Blackout 3.0 and Wind-Noise Reduction technology, to make sure that the end user experience is nothing short of fantastic – letting you carry out crystal clear conversations without the irritating “Beg your pardon?” question being asked for the umpteenth time.

Normally, Active Noise Cancellation is found only in high-end noise cancellation stereo headphones, but this time around with it being available on the Jabra SUPREME, the person wearing the headset will be able to filter out ambient noise for superior call quality.

I also like the moniker “Noise Blackout” being coined for the technology used – it kinda reminds me of the Transformers movie that had the character Blackout which was a no-nonsense Decepticon that laid waste to a US military base in the Middle East with his EMP blasts while downloading classified information from the servers.

Not only that, the Jabra SUPREME will come with a patented boom arm which “flips,” letting users to power on and off through the simple action of flipping the headset open and close. Apart from that, when you merge an advanced design like this with a state-of-the-art adjustable earhook and selection of ear cushions, your ears will definitely love you for it – as you get to have a really comfortable experience.

Expect the Jabra SUPREME to retail for $99 when it arrives at a retail (or virtual) store near you.

Driver Ejecting Bumpercrafts look fun

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 05:30 AM PDT

Want to teach your kids the impact that an accident can have on people in a car who do not wear seat belts? Apart from bringing them to a crash test dummy site, there might be a far more fun way of imparting such a lesson – through the $59.95 Driver Ejecting Bumpercrafts. Yes sir, the name itself says it all – these remote controlled bumpercrafts will see two players being pitted in a bitter duel, where the objective is to literally unseat an opponent driver.

Since each bumpercraft has an impact area button on its left and right, whenever the button is struck by an opposing bumpercraft, there is no bargaining with the built-in spring as it ejects the craft’s driver out of its seat. Your remote control will allow the bumpercraft to move forward, backward, left, and right, as long as it remains within a 10 foot radius.

Needless to say, it would be best to play this on smooth, level surfaces, anything rougher than that and it is going to get stuck all too easily. You might want to stock up on your collection of AAA batteries though, since you will need 10 of those puppies to power each set.

Pivot Power Power Strip

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 05:00 AM PDT

You know something? Being a geek would mean you would have access to a plethora of gadgets and gizmos to play around with, but sometimes, that would also mean having more stuff to keep track of – such as the amount of power adapters and cables that you need to bring along with you each time you go out for a trip. Well, there is nothing quite like a power strip to make sure that everything has a place to be plugged in, but sometimes, the traditional power strips weren’t designed in a way to fit into tight places or accommodate giant adapters.

With the $29.99 Pivot Power Power Strip, this attractively designed piece of hardware is capable of fitting even giant adapters without losing a spot beside it. No longer do you need to grapple with the issue of unusable outlets, coaxing one thirsty gadget to hold on for just “one more bar of battery” as you place a higher priority on your smartphone to revive its flagging battery.

Six adjustable outlets attached to six feet of cord makes for a really cool power strip – I don’t expect to hear you having any more troubles with your gadget charging moments the next time you head out for a trip.
