This statement is open to wide interpretation, of course, but my read on it was that it has made beacons interesting again. Apple is reportedly once again prepping a TV service-but is once again caught up in content licensing negotiations. The story is an oft-worn one at this point-rumors of Apple getting into the streaming business stretch back for years-but it's a perhaps more piquant one given the broader conversation in the industry around the future of media distribution. This week is IDF, Intel's Developer Forum, and in the opening keynote Brian Krzanich walked us through some of the stuff that will be coming to PCs, tablets and smartphones. The event promises a future when our devices can hear and respond to our voice dynamically, they can take the place of controls and musical instruments with no latency, can see and measure what they see, can be worn, can have robots deliver stuff to you-not to mention there will be vending machines that know who you are-and this year, folks even had a shot at getting on a game show. At the same time that Americans share "Which Downton Abbey Character Are You?" quizzes with the world-offering their personal data to the private sector-a record number of others refuse to answer government surveys and scare off census workers. Las Vegas, Nevada - As rumors emerge of a Microsoft Surface Phone, I'm willing to place a bet that Microsoft gets into the Internet of Things hardware (IoT) at some point in time. But first I want my Surface Pro 4 already. In a testament to investor interest in Google/Alphabet's next move, a tiny London firm saw its stock price spike 80 percent this week after rumors broke that it was an acquisition target. Online gambling is at once thrilling and terrifying, almost like bungee jumping into a volcano, only less hot (and generally less life-threatening). The idea that gambling is available right from a user's own home is exciting, but the various laws that circulate around online gambling that seem to change from state to state-and in some cases aren't even all that clear-are scary. That said, a new report from Juniper Research suggests that gambling is about to go more mainstream than ever before. While Google's self-driving car project is known far and wide, a new development in this space ranks on the "should have seen it coming" list, though many may not have. The race for the self-driving car is heating up, as Apple has officially begun working on one of its own. A number of high-severity cyber-vulnerabilities have been uncovered in the Android platform recently, not the least of which is the Stagefright bug, which affects a majority of Android phones.
