Over the past year, it has become clear what AT&T and T-Mobile US stand for. Sprint is looking for a merger with T-Mobile. It leaves Verizon in need of a rescue, because the company is leaning on marketing tricks more than technology accomplishments. AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile are all putting HD voice into production, with Verizon saying it will do so sometime by the end of the year. Since cellular carriers are now educating consumers on HD voice, will cable companies finally bring a broadband offering to the home this fall? Is telecommunications a natural monopoly? The question, though not often asked, is relevant for discussions of common carrier regulation as it pertains to either voice services, private line or Internet access services. But many don't start thinking about Walmart in terms of it buying things, and based on word from Doug McMillon, that's a light we're all going to have to start considering Walmart in very soon. The deadline that 13 percent of IT security pros say they can still access the systems of former employers using old credentials should be a major wake-up call. Opponents of network neutrality argue that innovation will suffer if Internet access is restricted only to best effort delivery. It appears backhaul strategy is becoming more significant as mobile service providers make the transition to faster networks. The ability to use the middle mile and backhaul assets owned by cable operators were among the reasons mobile service provider Vodafone bought Ono and Kabel Deutschland in Germany, for example. AlertID is a free mobile app which offers extensive functionality to assist parents at a time of emergency, such as a missing child.
