Featured Articles As I noted earlier this week in an article on Federal Judge Richard Leon's ruling that that bulk collection of phone calling metadata was in his view unconstitutional, that ruling was just the start of what promised to be a headline making week regarding the impact of the ongoing NSA scandal revelations by leaker Edward Snowden. Well, for those looking for a big NSA headline early Christmas gift, December 18 was actually a daily double. The cloud has always had the potential of being a cost-effective and elastic computing resource for customers. However, security has long been an issue that impeded adoption by many customers. Sometimes the interplay between regulatory decisions and business strategy is subtle; sometimes not. There is no denying that BlackBerry is going through a rough patch. I do realize that saying it like that is quite an understatement, however there has been quite a bit going on at that company. It has been less than a year since Research in Motion (RIM) officially changed its name to BlackBerry. It has been almost 11 months since BlackBerry skipped versions 8 and 9 of its operating system and jumped to the new BlackBerry 10. No prediction is required where it comes to expected 2014 price levels for video subscription services. They will rise. They always do. Online advertising is a great idea that often has some troubles in execution. While other forms of advertising are sold at flat rates-using the amount of space used or the amount of time it runs, sometimes both, as the metrics to determine pricing-online advertising is a much different animal that runs on several different metrics. Traffic generated is easily one of the biggest such measures, but even that brings with it the potential for fraud in the form of non-human traffic, a development that Chinese advertisers are finding has a lot more impact than some might think. GCI has announced plans to deploy Alaska's gigabit Internet access service, called fiber re:D, in Anchorage by 2015. Ballmer was notorious for killing off any and all such possibilities but we believe Mulally will move Microsoft positively forward here - and this is to us the key to long term success. There are many people outside and inside of Microsoft who can speak the languages of tech and business - Stephen Elop is one of them, but he may not be the ultimate right person - and Mulally needs to determine who will get the nod.
