Latest Featured Articles Those in the communications industry are starting to hear a lot about WebRTC, which has to do with how people make calls using Internet-connected computers, tablets, smartphones and apps. WebRTC is a new feature that will eventually be incorporated into most Web browsers, and will be leveraged in standalone apps. There are lots of ways to communicate with people these days. We can make a good old fashioned phone call, use a FaceTime app on a smartphone or even a Skype call from our laptops, but the wave of the future in video communications is real time communications on the Web, also known as WebRTC. We in the tech world are constantly confronted with what is likely to be the next big thing. In fact, there is a tendency, as Gartner Group has made famous, for us to become violently in love with something and then grow disappointed when ostensibly grandiose promises fail to materialize as quickly as pundits and industry experts have suggested. In an economy where losing customers is a lot more likely than adding them, it's always good to see news of customers picking up a new service. Earlier today, the folks at AddLive had just that news, counting three new customers for their WebRTC services: Wello, buzzumi and Hall.com. Will WebRTC make interactive voice response (IVR) obsolete? First, you might ask...what's WebRTC? It's an acronym that stands for Web Real-time Communications, and it's actually a standard. Chief innovation officer for Mozilla, Todd Simpson, recently accepted an invitation to deliver a keynote address at the WebRTC Conference and Expo, which runs from November 27-29, 2012, at the South San Francisco Conference Center.
