Time spent with video is rising quarter-over-quarter (QoQ), with consumption growing across all platforms. Overall, the average US adult aged 18 and older watches nearly 6 hours — 5 hours and 57 minutes — of video a day, up 11 minutes from the previous quarter.

As connected-TV devices become more ubiquitous in US TV households, they're likely to account for more video viewing minutes in coming quarters. Two-thirds (67%) of US TV households have a connected-TV device and 34% of homes have two or more connected-TV devices.

Broadband-enabled TV devices are taking precedence over other devices for viewing video. As SVOD becomes more common and people still prefer the TV set for viewing video content, connected-TV devices may ultimately supplant older digital devices like desktops and tablets — on which usage declined YoY — for video viewing in the home.

  • Uptake of skinny bundles remains sluggish across the industry, with just 2.7% penetration among US TV households, out of the 81% of TV households that are considered multichannel homes.
  • More than 80% of non-TV households still view video content. Of these 4 million homes, 27% are using TV sets with computers, 10% are using smartphones, and 6% use tablets.
