Twitch is now bigger than CNN and MSNBC – but we saw that coming

Hi,

Twitch is the leading platform for viewing video game streams and eSports competitions. But would you believe more people now watch it than MSNBC and CNN?

That's the latest news from Macqaurie, which found that the January average concurrent viewers on Twitch was a record 962,000. By comparison, 2017 total day viewership for MSNBC was 885,000 and CNN was 783,000. This places Twitch firmly among the ranks of most-watched U.S. cable channels.

It's an impressive accomplishment, but not a surprising one – especially not for our subscribers who read The eSports Ecosystem report we published nearly one year ago.

In the report, we forecast that eSports viewership globally would increase by a 15.2% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2015 to 2020, and Twitch's role as the leader of the pack in eSports streaming is a major part of that.
