How can traffic be on the rise yet revenues be poised for such a massive fall? The answer is simple, and insidious for telecom firms: the rapid rise of over-the-top (OTT) messaging systems, including those offered by LINE, WhatsApp, and a host of others like these. OTT messaging systems are poised for a huge increase in messaging traffic, going from 31 trillion messages in 2014 to around 100 trillion by the end of 2019 worldwide. Meanwhile, the revenue generated by those OTT firms will be just under one percent of the numbers realized from both SMS and MMS traffic.
