OneWeb, intent on building a 900 satellite Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) broadband network encompassing the globe, released a flurry of information today. The company announced it secured $500 million in A-round funding, with participants including Airbus Group, Bharti Enterprises, Hughes Network Systems, (Hughes), a subsidiary of EchoStar Corp., Intelsat, Qualcomm Incorporated, The Coca-Cola Company, the Virgin Group, and Totalplay, a Mexican broadband provider. It also signed contracts for a whopping 21 launches through Arianespace and 39 LauncherOne missions from Virgin Galactic.
Ransomware has been on the rise in recent months, and the extent of its ascension might horrify even the most casual observer. The software, which takes over a computer and effectively holds it-and its contents-hostage until conditions are met usually in the form of a ransom payment, has made some people a lot of money in a very short time. Putting the constant news of a new exploit aside, it is always a good idea to turn to those tracking the who, what, where, why, when and how the bad guys are working.
The idea of law enforcement networking goes back a long way, and today, it's hard to see a police car without some kind of network terminal in it enabled for remote access. But IBM is taking this idea to an impressive new level with the IBM i2 COPLINK on Cloud system, a cloud-based tool that gives law enforcement agencies, regardless of size or location, access to over one billion documents that can be readily accessed, shared and updated.
SpaceX and OneWeb engaged in a symbolic tit-for-tat last week in their respective quests to build large scale, low-flying broadband satellite networks. Word leaked out that SpaceX has filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to fly three demonstration satellites while OneWeb made a big splash announcement with Airbus on a paper commitment to build over 900 satellites. But there's still holes in OneWeb's bigger plan.
