Retail Wi-Fi: ROI is Closer Than It Appears - TechZone360

About this time last year, my column in CUSTOMER spoke to the movement of customer experience into the realm of the networks and IT groups. Almost a year later, it appears at least some level of impact is starting to be defined, thanks to a report recently put out by EarthLink, IHL Group, and AirTight Networks. The report indicates an increase in sales and customer loyalty following deployment of Wi-Fi within retail establishments.
For those who might be unaware, today marks the 20th anniversary of the 1995 decision to privatize the Internet in the U.S. Hence, this date has gained rightful credence as the one on which the commercial Internet was created.
Yesterday's launch of a Russian Progress cargo freighter to the International Space Station (ISS) went very badly, leaving the vehicle in the wrong orbit and in a slow spin. Progress 59 in NASA-speak, or M-27m in Russian labeling, is expected to burn up without completing its mission of delivering more than 6,000 pounds of food, fuel, and supplies to the space station.
This week I'm at Club Autosport in San Jose for the Qualcomm Automotive coming out party. Today they'll be sharing what they are doing to make your next car far more enjoyable, far safer, and far more reliable than your current vehicle.
As international aid agencies and NGOs gear up to help the victims of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal on Saturday, claiming more than 3,000 lives, injuring more than 7,000, leaving many unaccounted for and razing entire communities, the Verizon Foundation is weighing in with contributions of its own. The second largest cellular service provider is waiving all fees for calls and multimedia texts between the U.S. and Nepal from April 25 until May 31 to show its support for customers who may have been affected-either directly or via loved ones in the region-by the devastating natural disaster.
Perception can become reality, and this is not necessarily good news. This is particularly true during times of major change, which we are currently experiencing in almost every aspect of information and communications technology (ICT)-and especially since the perceptions of those in charge of making technology investment are at odds with both the perceptions and realities of those responsible for assuring risk mitigation, enhancing the customer experience, etc.
Comcast may have called off its $45 billion megamerger with Time Warner Cable, but the legacy of what that means for the FCC's policy for online video will live on.
The solar industry has been of particular interest to consumers, businesses, and technology developers over the course of the past decade or so. Solar technology has grown to be more efficient both in terms of how much energy it can produce and in terms of how much it costs to set up and install. In addition, the federal government has offered a ton of economic incentives and rewards for businesses and consumers who have adopted the technology, in a massive effort to drive more renewable energy usage and further development in the industry.
Silver was the primary mineral mined in Nevada when it was admitted to the union in 1864, earning it the slogan of The Silver State. Times changed, with the gaming and convention industries gaining prominence over the past 30 years. But the state is shifting character again, with technology being its big bet for the future.
Big telecom mergers just don't fly these days, but it took Comcast 14 months and at least $237 million spent in 2014 to figure it out it couldn't buy Time Warner Cable. In retrospect, this was a no brainer. If the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) wasn't going to sign off on an AT&T and T-Mobile merger back in 2011 and a Sprint/T-Mobile merger in 2014, what sane individual believed that Comcast could pull off a merger with so many negatives hanging over its head?
