The Horizontal is Becoming More Vertical: What that Means to You


The acquisition of Axeda by PTC, following PTC’s acquisition of Thingworx, brings up the question: What is the most important aspect of a platform?


PTC is an integrator with a great many customers, which clearly shows that the company’s rationale for the Axeda acquisition was not based on attaining greater market share.  Instead, PTC saw in the platforms something it believed could enhance its existing customer base. Likewise, when I listen to GE talk, it is clear that they are not expanding an ecosystem as much as learning from one for the purpose of supporting their integration services.


I have been talking for years about how the vertical platforms are becoming more horizontal, and now we are evidentially at a point where the platforms are being acquired by integrators who are using them in a vertical manner. Thus, the expertise that was being applied to drive universal solutions is now being taken away. I am not sure how that happened, actually, and I am not sure if the will be weakened as a result.

Today we have the Industrial Internet Consortium, as well as a few others that are looking to bring some standardization into the mix of IOT. The problem, though, is that with the major players so dominant it is hard to see where these entities are going to apply their focus. Read More
