In other words, pretty much an easier way of doing things we are already doing. Cube Slam, a new Google WebRTC app, shows that WebRTC is potentially much more. In the past, discussion has been raised as to whether Skype could be laid to rest by any ol' WebRTC developer, a Google-led federation of all the players, or by mortally wounding itself. Continuing to ponder it all, I came to the conclusion today that although WebRTC could create a new paradigm that equals or surpasses Skype in users, Skype can now safely consider itself legacy. My logic? Glad you asked. Web-based real-time communications (WebRTC) is generating plenty of exciting new opportunities, but this is no miracle technology. It's also offering up some significant challenges in terms of bandwidth use and the like, so many companies are looking to address some of these issues and, hopefully, make non-issues of same before WebRTC can get truly widespread. Dialogic has something in mind to take on one critical challenge in its newly-unveiled PowerMedia XMS 2.1 software media server. WebRTC is a peer-to-peer architecture. What this means is that the network can operate without the need for aggregation points (Think Verizon). Because aggregation points are not necessary, it will be more difficult for anyone with malicious intent to gather network-wide information.
