March 26, 2012 For some of us on the East Coast, last week brought summer a little too early as temperatures skyrocketed to 80 plus degrees, company heaters came to a screeching halt and students flocked to school clad in shorts and flip flops. While some basked in the very early summer glow, data center managers were more reluctant to rejoice in this warm weather as a great deal of importance was placed on making sure that data centers stayed cold. The East Coast wasn’t alone in this heat wave as temperatures – that are often common in June – broke hundreds of temperature records over the last several days. In fact, some places saw temperatures surge 30 to 40 degrees above normal, nearing or surpassing the warmest temperatures ever recorded so early in the season, according to a Washington Post article. Interestingly, last week’s nearly 943 new record highs were broken or tied across the U.S. compared to just nine record lows. Some of the most impressive record temperatures hailed from the Midwest where Chicago hit a high of 91, 35 degrees above normal, and Minneapolis broke its record high by nine degrees, hitting 73.
