Educators with The Association for Children with Down Syndrome (ACDS) have discovered a solution to help children with special needs communicate: the iPad. The iPad is essentially an augmentative communicationdevice, but less expensive than conventional tools, and children find them more appealing.
Children the organization assist have Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder and other types of communication disadvantages, but incorporating the iPad into their educational system has parents and educators noticing communication capabilities from their children that they previously were unaware of.
Before the ACDS recognized the iPad’s potential for educational use, progressive schools in Nevada have used the tools in their curriculum, and analysts have seen the iPad’s potential after observing its use by second graders during class time.
One reason the iPad is a hit among the special education students is for the same reason other tablets are a hit among progressive education students: It’s cool.
