Sajeel Hussain, chief marketing officer of CafeX Communications, is a straight shooter. As he recently wrote for INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine, WebRTC may not be the panacea some project it to be. But he does believe that this technology provides a solid foundation for many innovative solutions proven to have a substantial positive impact on businesses. Augmenting WebRTC technology to bypass limitations associated with browser support, firewall traversal, multi-party calling and enterprise policy conflicts, he wrote, are the first steps to broad adoption and success of real-time web solutions.
What are the typical challenges that you encounter when trying to leverage real-time communications in your environment? For some, it's gaining a clear understanding of needs from the user base. Last week, Caesars Palace in Las Vegas played host to the All About the API event. The inaugural event produced enthusiastic, educational sessions discussing the bleeding edge in one of tech's most popular arenas today: APIs. APIs are nothing new, but today are garnering attention because everything in communications today revolves around talking to another service, platform or device. Two firms enabling this next generation of communications solutions are Dialogic and Genband, and the duo joined forces in the most recent CommsDevZone Podcast.
Communications-enabling applications are well on their way to becoming mainstream, as Alan Percy, senior director of product marketing at Dialogic, notes. He points out that Snapchat, Uber, and WhatsApp are all examples of this, and that they have helped users understand the value of having a two-way, data-enabled instant conversation with a provider or friend, and without having to initiate a telephone call. Real-time communications, he adds, also has enabled a range of embedded systems and Internet of Things applications to reach out and communicate to the users that maintain or are affected by their processes.
