After the rollout of digital TV, the consumer electronics industry had an opportunity to add serious computing power to the device. But it didn't try hard enough, so now everyone from Amazon to Microsoft is offering an HDMI dongle to turn the $250 to $2500 HDTV into a big screen monitor. A combination of greed, lack of innovation, and unwillingness to take risk means TV manufacturers are stuck for the next decade trying to make bigger and better displays without adding much more.

General Motors (GM) pioneered telematics with the introduction of its OnStar service. Via an opt-in and for-pay service, GM provides a monthly vehicle diagnostics report with dealer maintenance notifications. If you are in trouble, customers can run on-demand diagnostics in real-time and provide life safety services in case of a crash. Auto manufacturers need to offer discounts or even give away services for free because of the Big Data and goodwill benefits involved.
Computing giant IBM made a surprising announcement this week: the company is launching its own Web-based email service called IBM Verse. Operating under a freemium model with a free version for consumers and paid for enterprises, the service will offer new organizational algorithms and feature seamless integration with a variety of built-in social media and collaborative tools.
