SAP has announced that it is sponsoring two major open source cloud computing communities: OpenStack and Cloud Foundry.
“The developer and open source community are key to breakthrough technology innovation,” said Bjoern Goerke, executive vice president of products and innovation technology at SAP. “Through the CloudFoundry and OpenStack initiatives, as well as new developer tools, SAP deepens its commitment to the developer community and enables them to innovate and code in the cloud.”
OpenStack is an open Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) platform and Cloud Foundry is a Platform as a Service (PaaS) solution. As the name suggests, it’s a stack of a number of open source tools for managing large server clusters necessary to deliver cloud applications, including networking, storage and database provisioning. Originally a joint project between Rackspace and NASA, it’s attracted a number of sponsors including AT&T, IBM and VMware, among others. SAP announced that it will make changes to the code base.
