Insteon is arguably the best home automation currently in the market, but homes that use the technology (mine does) are still few and very far between. The technology has advanced significantly over the last decade going from barely working to working well and embracing fire and smoke detectors, door locks, security cameras, occupancy sensors, and alarm systems. The problem remains that it is still mostly for hobbyists or professional installers, and most folks don’t even know what it could do for them let alone want it. Today Insteon moves into Microsoft stores with bundles designed to help move people into a more automated age. This isn’t a huge step but a necessary one if we are ever to evolve our homes into the automated wonders they could be.
Why Automation?
Trust me that is something I used to ask myself when my wife would try to get the system to work and it didn’t (generally this would happen when I was half way around the world from her). For the most part it is for peace of mind.
With a fully automated home you can check on any connected device (switches, cameras, lights, door locks, fire alarms) to see what its status is and then change that status if you need to with your Smartphone. You want the house warm or cool when you get home from work? Just pop out your Smartphone and make the adjustment. Worried someone is going to steal a package that UPS is dropping off while you are at work, keep on it with your front door camera or unlock the front door and remotely ask the delivery guy to put it inside and lock the door after him. You have a middle of the night doorbell ring? Turn on the lights, and check the camera before you even get out of bed.
