Featured Articles In recent days, I have been looking at surveys that say retailers are not expecting an increase this year in sales from all channels, based on a short holiday buying season and continued economic uncertainty. Eschewing the oscillation in capital spending distorted by the Internet and telecom bubble of the late 1990s, global telecom capital investment is set to grow between 2012 and 2017 in absolute terms, though remaining relatively constant in percentage terms, according to the latest forecast by Infonetics Research. Yahoo has hired Katie Couric to be its new Global Anchor. The company is betting big money that Couric will deliver big results. More importantly, Yahoo is the latest company to try to reboot the media world in its own way. Where is the best place to buy a phone? Possibly one of the biggest locations there is to check out almost every type of phone out there would be Best Buy, although I personally feel that I'm in overload mode when I walk through the cell phone section. Sometimes too much gets in the way of making the right decision. Cisco Systems may be busy building and selling network gear, but it still takes a little time to do research, such as a recent report on cloud traffic becoming the dominant traffic force in just a few years time. Now the company is taking a cold hard look at virtualization, and here it finds that 77 percent of IT pros have some form of virtualization in their shops. Better news for the likes of VMware and Citrix is that 71 percent plan to increase their spend, some 20 percent on average. The cloud raises concerns for just about every operation. But when you are the U.S. federal government, these issues are paramount. But that isn't stopping the feds from having a digital-first strategy that will provide self-service for citizens over the web. That at least according to research firm Ovum. Several weeks ago I had the pleasure of interviewing Cisco CTO of Security Bret Hartman. In discussing Cisco's approach to working with enterprise to protect themselves from cyber attacks, he stressed that while historically attention has been paid to be reactive, increasingly IT needs tools to be proactive as well. Research firm Ovum has added its voice to the need for enterprises to be proactive with the publication of its Security 2014 Trends to Watch Report. When Google's Nexus 5 hit the market late last month, it was widely acclaimed for providing high-end specs at a budget price - all in a nicely designed package.
