Reed College Students Say iPhone is for Dad's Generation

Reed College is considered one of the nation’s most interesting liberal arts colleges. In fact, in a recent review posted online about the Portland, Ore., school one student said that,” You can have a conversation with almost anyone and learn something.”

So when students started to talk about smartphones, Martin Fichter, acting president of HTC (News - Alert) Americas, listened. He learned something. He liked what he heard. They reportedly told him that iPhones are way from cool.

Given that HTC is a rival to Apple’s (News - Alert) iPhone, he no doubt found that way, way cool.

The informal comments came from students living in the same dorm as his daughter. Mashable says the students told him that none has an iPhone... Read More

SAP Announces New Solutions Built on SAP HANA Platform

SAP (News - Alert) AG has rolled out two new solutions built on the company's in-memory computing platform, SAP HANA. The SAP Smart Meter Analytics software and the SAP COPA Accelerator software were announced at the company's SAP TechEd 2011 event in Las Vegas.

The SAP HANA platform is enabling SAP to renew its existing applications while also offering a new class of applications. The new products were developed by SAP product and design teams that worked in close collaboration with the company's customers. They used design-thinking principles that work from the end user's needs backwards.

The applications were designed to give customers insight into "big data," enabling them to leverage large amounts of information for analysis, planning, forecasting and simulations in a natural way versus traditional time-consuming, sequential approaches, which may be rigid. The new solutions are part of the SAP BusinessObjects Strategic Workforce Planning application, which was announced at the end of last year... Read More

A Simple Demographic Chart That Says Market Valuations Are Going Down

This could be an example of seeing two lines that moving similarly, and thinking there's a connection, or maybe there's some real insight here...

Either way, in a note today, Citi's Tobias Levkovitch looks at the M/O ratio, which is the ratio of the middle-aged (40-49 year old) cohort vs. the old-age (60-69) cohort,a nd notes an interesting similarity between that ratio and S&P PE ratios.

Not surprisingly (we supposed) as the number of high earnings/high consuming middle-agers rises and falls in relation to old agers, stock market valuations rise and fall.
