Good morning! Here is the tech news you need to know this Tuesday. 1. Apple is reportedly working on at least three new Macs — two MacBooks and one desktop Mac — with processors designed in-house. The company may also release a redesigned iPad sometime later this year. 2. Cloud computing firm VMware is reportedly considering buying Dell. Dell currently owns 80% of VMWare, so the operation would be a reverse merger that could allow Dell to be traded publicly without going through a formal IPO. 3. The FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said he's opposed to proposals that would see the US government build a nationwide 5G network infrastructure. Earlier reports, later denied by the Trump administration, reported that members of the National Security Council asked the president to consider this proposal out of fear of "losing out" to China. 4. Microsoft Teams, the company's alternative to Slack, is getting its first huge update. The new version includes a slew of new features, like tighter integration with third-party apps, a revamped command box, slash commands, and a new store where you can search for apps by name or integration type. 5. Facebook will show more news from local sources in the news feed. It will identify local publishers by analyzing clicks in tight geographic areas. 6. Microsoft has bought PlayFab, a gaming service startup. The Redmond giant said that the acquisition will help it bolster its Azure platform in the ongoing competition against Google and Amazon. 7. Microsoft has released an update that prevents Windows 10 machines from randomly rebooting. The affected devices had received a Spectre/Meltdown software fix from Intel, but the patch was buggy and affected numerous users. 8. The UK government announced that it will fine companies in "critical industries" up to £17 million ($24 million) if they don't put in place appropriate cybersecurity measures. The move comes as a response to a 2016 initiative named the NIS directive. 9. Immersion says it has settled its lawsuit and signed a license agreement with Apple. The two companies were at odds over patents on Apple-designed technologies such as 3D Touch, Force Touch, the Taptic Engine, and other haptic tech. 10. Google has completed its acquisition of HTC's smartphone division. The deal, worth $1.1 billion (£780 million), has seen Google purchase the Taiwanese firm's smartphone division, as well as a chunk of its smartphone-related intellectual properties (IPs). |
